What the site is

NameBiscuit is a free reference site that presents pet-name popularity, trends, meanings, and breed information computed from public data. It is provided for general information and entertainment. It is not professional advice of any kind.

Accuracy and “as-is” data

Our figures describe the licensed and registered pet population found in municipal open data — not every pet. Licensing compliance varies by city, source datasets have gaps and errors, and our processing can introduce its own. We work to keep the data honest, but we make no guarantee that any name, count, rank, or trend is complete, current, or error-free. Everything on the site is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

Data sources and attribution

The underlying data comes from municipal dog-licensing and animal-services open data (including NYC, Allegheny County PA, Worcester MA, Seattle, Cambridge MA, Toronto, Zürich, Basel-Stadt, South Australia, and city shelter systems), each published under its own portal's open-data terms. Those datasets remain the property of, and are credited to, their respective sources. Worcester dog license data is used courtesy of the Office of the City Clerk, City of Worcester, MA. Our own presentation, writing, design, and derived rankings belong to NameBiscuit.

Acceptable use

You may use the site for personal, non-commercial reference. Please don't attempt to disrupt the site, scrape it in a way that degrades service for others, or misrepresent our derived figures as official government statistics. If you'd like to reuse the underlying open data, get it from the original sources under their terms.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, NameBiscuit and its operators are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the site or its data. You use the information here at your own discretion.

Changes

We may update these terms as the site changes. When we do, we'll revise the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the site means you accept the updated terms.
